The Importance of Being a witness

There is something extraordinary about silence and stillness that draws forth creativity and thunderous flashes of insight. It is no wonder that God, our magnificent Creator, is found in the silence. His presence is a present.

In the silence is where I find moments of greatest clarity in my life. It is the spark that ignites and lights the path forward. And what is it about the silence that is so profound it can bring you to your knees with awe? The silence allows you to be the witness, a mighty observer and servant to God’s works in your life and in the lives of others.

When we get quiet inside, silencing the inner voice and the constant distractions of the material world, we become a witness to what God wants to communicate to us. What a humbling position to be in and sometimes we do not feel worthy of this task, but yet He is calling. He is calling even if you do not hear or see the signs He sends. I remember one November, when I noticed that a single deer was visible along my path and sometimes right in the middle of my path forward. This did not happen once or twice or three times but many, many times over the course of a week. The sighting of the deer was so peculiar that it forced me to take notice. Each time the deer stopped and looked right at me with intense eye contact.

One morning a deer was running along the side of the car in the grass when I was taking my daughter to school. She spotted the deer and said, “I think the deer is trying to cross the street.” I slowed down the car and came to a stop to let the deer cross the street in front of me. Up about 15 feet ahead of my car, this single deer crossed the street slowly, stopped right in the middle of the road and turned and looked at me. The deer not only looked at me but he looked into my soul and I could feel him say, “I see you.” This graceful mighty creature who can leap and bound and climb and jump with his powerful hinds’ feet stopped and bore witness to my presence.

This realization that the deer held space for me hit me so hard that I sobbed tears of gratefulness that morning. And I innately knew that it was not the deer that held space for me, but God (the Divine Creator) who sent me a potent invitation to join Him on a spiritual journey to the High Places. As this knowledge swelled in me, I felt chills all the way down my spine, the realization signaling in me the acceptance of this generous invitation.
